Adult Competitive Advanced Basketball is open to athletes 21 and older. Exemptions may be requested for mature athletes over the age of 18. Athletes at this level play fast-paced, high-skill, full-court 5v5 basketball. Our 5v5 teams train at practice and compete in regional Qualifiers and State Games.

Athlete selection will take place at the first practice in January. New and returning athletes are invited to participate in this session. Athletes qualify for our Advanced program based on demonstrated basketball skills.
Upon assessment completion, those athletes not selected for one of the two advanced teams at PCC will be referred to the intermediate basketball program at the Barrie School.
Coaches place athletes on teams based on ability. Coaches also consider an athlete’s past record of strong commitment to the sport when making team assignments.
SOMO has a limited number of courts and coaches to support our Advanced Basketball program. Roster size will likely be capped at 15-20 athletes. This will help to ensure that participating athletes have the opportunity for meaningful involvement.
SOMO provides all equipment. Athletes should bring bottled water (no sports drinks or sodas, please) to each practice and event.
During practices, athletes should wear their yellow SOMO T-shirt, appropriate athletic apparel, and basketball shoes (high-tops are recommended). SOMO provides team uniforms to be worn at Qualifiers and State Competitions.
Location: Potomac Community Recreation Center (11315 Falls Rd, Potomac, MD 20854)
Timing: Practices occur on Sunday mornings from early January through the end of March.
Activities: Athletes begin with warm-ups followed by basketball skills training. Practice concludes with game play within the team or between our two advanced teams to build skills.
Teams will participate in a minimum of three Qualifiers. Dates and locations will be announced at the start of the season.
The State Basketball Tournament occurs in late March. The Team Manager will announce the location and time after season start.
Athletes are expected to attend all practices and all scheduled Qualifiers in order to be eligible for Basketball State Games.
Adult Competitive Advanced Basketball athletes must choose Basketball as their only Winter Sport.
No contract is required for our Advanced program. However, athletes are expected to commit to their coaches and teammates that they will attend the weekly practices, all qualifiers, and the State Tournament. An inability to meet those commitments can disqualify an athlete from our Advanced program.
The more volunteers we have, the better we can support all athletes! SOMO especially welcomes any family members and staff caregivers who often accompany the athlete to practice as volunteers. If you want to volunteer, please sign up for the sport using the Sports Season Sign-Up Form for Volunteers or email the Head Coach using the email at the top of this page. Thank you for helping us support our athletes!
