Overview: 

SOMO’s Competitive Skills Basketball Program welcomes athletes from ages 8+ and Unified Partners of high-school-age or older.

Practices: Sundays,  starting January 4, 2026 through March 29, 2026
Time: 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM
Location: The Barrie School gym

Qualifiers: Dates TBD
State Games: State Basketball Tournament – Sunday, March 29, 2026 at University of Maryland (College Park)

Signup Begins: Sunday, November 9, 2025

Sport’s State Games competition date: March 31, 2026

All Forms must be up to date before the signup date (second Sunday in November).

The expiration date on an Athlete’s Registration form, or a Volunteer’s certification, must be after the above State Games competition date to participate in the upcoming season.

Equipment:

SOMO provides all equipment.

Uniform Requirements:

Athletes should wear their yellow SOMO T-shirt, appropriate athletic apparel, and tennis shoes. SOMO provides team uniforms to be worn at Qualifiers and State Competitions. 

Practice Overview:

Athletes work on skill building for future game play. Skills include target passing, 10-meter dribble, spot shot, perimeter shooting, catching and passing.

Location: The Barrie School gym (13500 Layhill Road, Silver Spring, MD 20906)

Timing: Practices occur on Sundays from early January through the end of March.

Activities: Athletes begin with warm-ups followed by basketball skills training.

Qualifiers:

The Team Manager will provide more details, including dates and locations at the start of the season.

State Competition:

The State Basketball Tournament occurs in late March. The Team Manager will announce more details, including the location and time after season start.

Participation in Other SOMO Sports:

Basketball players can participate in other SOMO sports as long as the athlete can maintain full practice participation in all of their sports.

Volunteers:

Our largest volunteer need is for volunteers who can work and play with the athletes. Volunteers at SOMO events are eligible for SSL hours. There are also volunteer opportunities for Coaches.
