We often say about Special Olympics that Athletes are Why, but Volunteers are HOW! We are an all-volunteer organization. We can only offer programs where we have volunteers to run them. We need many volunteers to help run our many programs. See Volunteer Opportunities to learn more about specific opportunities we offer.
Who is eligible to be a Special Olympics Volunteer?
Individual volunteers must be at least a freshman in high school. A few volunteer opportunities are available on a case-by-case basis for younger volunteers when participating with our “Youth Sports Programs” and under adult supervision.
How to Apply to Become a Special Olympics Volunteer
First, complete your volunteer application. All prospective volunteers must complete a volunteer application package and complete our Protective Behaviors training. We have separate volunteer application packages for adults and students (up thru high school). Please click on the application package below that fits you and follow the instructions in the application.

Second, sign up for a sport at the beginning of each season. Our coaches need to know who is volunteering to help each season, and we use our volunteer sign-up to learn that information. If you are new to a sport, we recommend reaching out to the sport’s head coach to discuss your interest and how you can help. Every sports page on our web site has an email address you can use to reach that sport’s leadership team.
Our sports are divided into seasons and each sport has its own start and end dates. Volunteer Signup opens 2-4 weeks before the season starts. When signup is open, go to Sports Season Signup for Volunteers – Montgomery County (somdmontgomery.org) to signup as a volunteer in that sport.
